Pizza Express is one of my favourite, go-to Italian restaurants. I love trying new places all the time but sometimes it is nice to indulge in an old favourite. Somewhere you know the food is going to be delicious. I have been visiting different branches of Pizza Express since I was a child, I think it was an obvious choice for my parents when me and my sister were younger as we were obsessed with their famous dough balls!
I’ve been to quite a few of the branches in Manchester and it’s safe to say I am always to surprised at how different each restaurant looks. Each one has its own character and I love this. It means you get a slightly different experience every time you visit but with consistently good food.
Last week I went along to the new Didsbury Pizza Express restaurant which has been newly refurbished. The building used to be an old post office and this has influenced the decor. There is a colourful, red post box outside by the main entrance and the walls have been decorated with artwork that uses postage stamps. It looks really fantastic and it is clear that a lot of thought has gone into this styling. I love a restaurant that has features of its past built into its interior and it gives this Pizza Express lots of personality. The rest of the decor has been vamped out in a gorgeous, classic way. With tan brown leather seats and low hanging lights, it feels really sophisticated in there – perhaps mirroring the young professionals that often move out to Didsbury. Anyway, I really enjoyed eating here In the newly revamped space.
I’ve tried quite a few different dishes on the menu so on this visit I thought it was a great opportunity to sample the new Autumn menu. For starters we shared both the calamari (from the normal menu) and the Risotto Fresco – a salmon and garlic risotto topped with tomatoe, red onion and grab Milano cheese. It was delicious. It was so fresh and creamy and the hint of chilli oil gave it the perfect kick. The calamari was incredible too.
I was so pleased to see cannelloni on the Autumn menu as this is one of my favourite dishes. The heavenly combination of carbs and gooey, melted cheese was so delicious – I wish I could live on this. Tom went for the Basilicata Romana, one of the pizza dishes on the Autumn menu. This pizza is topped with lamb, mint and chilli meatballs and was really really yummy. The classic combination of lamb and mint was brilliant and worked so well on a pizza.
Pudding time. I really wanted to try the Chocolate Fondant from the Autumn menu but unfortunately they had run out (it must be good!). Instead we decided to share the Chocolate Glory ice cream – a dreamy combo of vanilla gelato, chocolate sauce and chunks of chocolate fudge cake.
Our evening in the new Pizza Express restaurant was a great experience and I loved the stylish new decor here. If you’ve not yet been to this branch it’s definitely worth a visit!
