Most of my workouts take place in the morning. I think the fact that my gym is on my walk into work helps get me there nice and early but I do actually really enjoy gyming in the morning. I always have way more motivation to go first thing rather than after a long day at work. The problem is though, I have never been very good at working out on an empty stomach. For some reason as soon as I wake up I need something to eat asap. If I try and do any exercise without eating I literally nearly faint! So I always have something quick before my workout. I sometimes have bananas, sometimes a spoon of peanut butter or sometimes a Weetabix with hazelnut milk. Recently though I tried making some of Madeline Shaw’s protein balls from her book, ‘Get the Glow’ and I absolutely love them. They are perfect for having before a gym session first thing in the morning. They are packed with energy but don’t make you feel too full before working out.
I am a bit of a peanut butter obsessive too and this recipe allows me to get my peanut butter fix in a regulated portion size. (It’s too easy to eat half a jar without realising!) I also ended up replacing my evening chocolate fix with these protein balls as they are so tasty and chocolatey!
They are also really quick and simple to make. Some of the ingredients might not be every day cupboard items but they are easy enough to find in a supermarket. I managed to stretch the recipe to make 25 balls so they lasted me so so long too plus they are super easy to transport around in a little Tupperware. Let’s not forget how pretty and Instagrammable they look too…
If like me you need a quick burst of energy before you work out then these could be perfect for you. I am sure they would work brilliantly before a workout at any time too, not just in the morning. In fact they are great as a pick-me-up at any time during day. I’ve summarised the recipe at the bottom of this post if you are interested.
You will need:
- 100g oats
- 150g almonds
- 50g raw cacao
- 1 tbsp maca powder
- Pinch of salt
- 3 tbsp honey
- 100g almond butter
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
How to make them:
- In the food processor, blend the oats and almonds for 1–2 minutes, then add the cacao, maca and salt.
- Blend for 1 minute, then add the honey, almond butter and coconut oil.
- Blend, then roll the mixture into balls and put them in the fridge to set for a few hours
